Telemetry

also: device telemetry · remote monitoring · data logging

Data that devices send home about their status, usage and environment, used to monitor fleets, debug field problems and improve products.

Telemetry can include sensor readings, operating states, error codes, reset causes, battery health, firmware version, signal strength and usage events. Collected across a fleet, it reveals problems before customers report them, shows how the product is really used, and supports features such as remote monitoring and predictive maintenance.

Designing telemetry means choosing what to send, how often, in what format, and with what privacy protections. Bandwidth, battery and cloud cost push toward summaries and events; debugging pushes toward detail. Remotely adjustable log levels and on-demand diagnostic uploads balance the two.

Where it bites: personal-data laws apply when telemetry can be linked to people, and users notice and object to collection they weren't told about.

Founder takeaway

Define a telemetry schema early that includes health metrics (reset causes, errors, battery, signal strength), and document what is collected and why.
