Device fleet management
also: device management · provisioning · IoT platform
The systems and processes for identifying, provisioning, monitoring, updating and retiring every connected device a company has shipped.
Each connected device needs a unique identity and credentials (ideally installed securely in the factory), registration in a back-end system, configuration, monitoring, firmware updates and eventually decommissioning. Fleet management ties these together so you can answer: which units are online, on which firmware, with which issues, owned by whom.
Good practice includes unique per-device credentials with no shared default passwords (now a legal requirement for consumer connectable products in the UK, for example), staged OTA rollouts, remote diagnostics, and secure transfer of ownership when devices are resold.
Where it bites: provisioning designed as an afterthought tends to produce manual factory steps, shared secrets, and devices that can't be re-associated when a customer moves or sells them.
Founder takeaway
Design device identity and provisioning with your manufacturer before PVT, using unique credentials for every device.
