Matter

also: Matter smart-home standard

An open smart-home standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance that lets certified devices work across major ecosystems over Wi-Fi, Thread or Ethernet.

Matter defines how smart-home devices (lights, locks, thermostats, sensors, plugs, appliances) describe themselves and accept commands, so one product can work with several voice assistants and home apps without separate integrations. It runs over IP networks (Wi-Fi, Thread and Ethernet) and typically uses Bluetooth Low Energy for setup. It is developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).

For a smart-home product, Matter can replace several ecosystem-specific integrations with one, and it supports local control of basic functions without depending on a cloud service.

Where it bites: certification requires CSA membership and testing; Matter covers only the device types its specification defines (check yours is included); device attestation certificates must be provisioned during production; and features beyond the standard still need your own app.

Founder takeaway

Check that your device type is defined in the current Matter specification and budget for membership, certification and factory provisioning.
