Pre-certified radio module

also: modular approval · certified module · module vs chip-down

A ready-made radio subassembly already certified with FCC, ISED and others, so a product can reuse its approvals instead of certifying a custom radio.

Designing a radio "chip-down" on your own board gives the lowest unit cost and smallest size, but requires full intentional-radiator certification in every market. A pre-certified module (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular, LoRa) carries its own approvals; under FCC rules this is a modular approval (47 CFR 15.212). The host product can rely on the module's grant provided the integration follows the module's conditions: approved antennas, layout and placement rules, and labeling such as "Contains FCC ID: …".

The host still needs its own unintentional-radiator testing, and integration checks may be needed to confirm the module remains compliant inside the product. Cellular modules typically also need carrier certification.

Modules are common for first products and lower volumes; chip-down designs become worth considering when volumes justify the extra RF engineering and certification cost.

Founder takeaway

Start with a pre-certified module unless volumes clearly justify a custom radio, and follow the module's integration guide exactly.
