EVT (engineering validation test)
also: EVT · engineering validation
The first build of production-intent design, used to prove the engineering works: does the product meet its functional and performance requirements?
EVT builds are small quantities made with the intended electronics and mechanics, though often with prototype-process parts (printed or machined housings, early boards). The goal is to show that the design works: every function, the performance specifications, power and thermal behavior, firmware fundamentals and early pre-compliance results.
EVT, DVT and PVT are widely used industry stage names rather than a formal standard, and companies adapt them. What matters is clear, written exit criteria for each stage.
Where it bites: skipping EVT exit criteria and rushing into tooling locks in design flaws. EVT exists to find problems, so budget time for at least one board or mechanical revision afterwards.
Founder takeaway
Write down EVT exit criteria (what must pass) before the build, and plan for a design revision after it.
