Works-like vs looks-like prototype
also: works-like prototype · looks-like prototype · functional prototype · appearance model
Early prototypes are often split: a works-like build proves function and ignores looks; a looks-like model shows final form without working insides.
Combining final appearance and full function early is slow and expensive. A works-like prototype, built from development boards, wiring and printed or machined mounts, proves the technology and the user interaction. A looks-like model, printed or machined and finished, tests size, ergonomics, aesthetics and customer reaction. A later combined prototype merges the two as the design moves toward EVT.
The split lets electronics, firmware and industrial design progress in parallel and learn quickly.
Where it bites: integration surprises when the working electronics must fit the looks-like shape (antenna performance, heat, battery size, connectors, assembly), so start packaging studies early.
Founder takeaway
Run works-like and looks-like tracks in parallel, but check packaging and fit between them early and often.
