PVT (production validation test)
also: PVT · pilot run · production verification
A pilot run on the real production line, at production pace, to prove the factory can build the product consistently at target yield and quality.
With the design frozen, PVT validates the manufacturing process. The factory builds a meaningful quantity using final tooling, fixtures, work instructions, test stations and operators. The team measures yield, cycle time, defect types and test coverage, and fixes process issues. PVT units are often sellable if they meet all criteria.
PVT also proves the supply chain (every part from its production source) and the packaging, labeling and shipping steps.
Where it bites: treating PVT as simply "the first batch" rather than a validation exercise. Process problems discovered at full volume cost far more.
Founder takeaway
Set yield and quality targets for PVT, trace every defect to a root cause, and don't ramp to mass production until the targets are met.
