IEC 62368-1

also: UL 62368-1 · EN IEC 62368-1 · hazard-based safety engineering

The international safety standard for audio/video, IT and communication equipment; it replaced IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065 with a hazard-based approach.

IEC 62368-1 classifies the energy sources in a product (electrical, thermal, mechanical, radiation, chemical, fire) by how much harm they could cause and requires safeguards between those sources and people. It covers a broad range of electronics: computers and peripherals, networking equipment, chargers and power adapters, many smart-home devices, and audio/video equipment. US and EU regulators aligned on 20 December 2020 for the transition away from IEC 60950-1 and IEC 60065.

It is commonly used for CE marking (via the Low Voltage Directive or the RED's safety requirement) and for NRTL certification in North America as UL/CSA 62368-1.

Where it bites: the standard reaches into design details such as creepage distances, enclosure flammability ratings, temperature limits for touchable surfaces and battery safeguards, so designing to it from the start is far cheaper than retrofitting.

Founder takeaway

If your product is IT, AV or communication equipment, design to IEC 62368-1 from the start and have a safety engineer review the schematic and enclosure.
