An off-the-shelf drill rebuilt as a soil core sampler. Its speed controller moved out of the grip into a finned aluminium enclosure, where it can run a higher current limit; with the FOC and MTPA parameters tuned, peak torque rose 50% over stock. The firmware now holds a set speed while the load changes from stratum to stratum. Every other value here, from the curve shapes to the rpm, N·m and depths, is simulated (SIM) for illustration.

Challenge

Convert an off-the-shelf drill into a precision soil core sampler with regulated speed control and higher maximum torque.

Approach

We selected the best stock model, documented a step-by-step teardown, and modified the casing to fit new parts. Harnesses moved to heavier-gauge wire with modular connectors for higher current and easy reassembly, and we reprogrammed the motor velocity curve. A custom testbed benchmarked speed and torque performance.

Highlights

  • Relocating the speed controller to an external aluminum heatsink enclosure raised its current limit, and with it the motor’s torque limit.
  • Tuning the controller’s field-oriented control (FOC) and maximum-torque-per-amp (MTPA) parameters raised stock torque by 50%.
  • Delivered a batch of ten prototypes with an assembly manual, including fabrication illustrations and wiring diagrams.
