WEEE
also: WEEE Directive · 2012/19/EU · e-waste · crossed-out wheeled bin
The EU directive (2012/19/EU) making producers pay for the collection and recycling of their electrical and electronic products at end of life.
Under WEEE, producers selling electrical and electronic equipment in an EU country must register with that country's system (each member state runs its own), report the quantities they place on the market, and finance collection and recycling, typically through a compliance scheme. Products carry the crossed-out wheeled-bin symbol. Batteries fall under separate EU battery rules with their own producer obligations.
Where it bites: registration is country by country, so selling online into several EU countries can require several registrations or an authorized representative in each. Similar extended producer responsibility schemes exist for packaging, and in some US states for electronics and batteries.
Founder takeaway
Before selling into each EU country, register for WEEE, and for battery and packaging producer responsibility, there or through an authorized representative.
