PCB layout

also: board layout · PCB design · Gerber files · fabrication files

Placing components and routing copper connections on a printed circuit board, producing the fabrication and assembly files a factory builds from.

Layout turns the schematic into a physical board: where each part sits, how traces run across layers, where power and ground planes go, and how the board fits the enclosure, connectors and mounting points. The outputs are fabrication data (traditionally Gerber files, or formats such as ODB++ and IPC-2581), drill files, assembly drawings and pick-and-place data.

Layout decides much of a product's electrical performance: noise in sensitive measurements, emissions in EMC testing, heat spreading, antenna range and manufacturability. A perfect schematic can still fail because of a poor ground return path or a switching regulator placed next to an antenna.

Where it bites: tight enclosures force compromises, late mechanical changes ripple through the routing, and each respin (layout, fabrication and assembly) typically costs weeks.

Founder takeaway

Fix the board outline, connector positions and mounting early with mechanical engineering, and review the layout for EMC, thermal and test access before ordering boards.
