EMC Directive

also: 2014/30/EU · electromagnetic compatibility directive

The EU directive (2014/30/EU) requiring electrical and electronic equipment to limit its electromagnetic emissions and tolerate typical interference.

For products without radios, the EMC Directive sets the essential requirements for emissions and immunity. Compliance is usually shown by testing to harmonized standards, either generic standards for residential or industrial environments or product-family standards such as those for IT and multimedia equipment or household appliances.

Products with radios fall under the Radio Equipment Directive instead, which includes its own EMC requirement. The EMC Directive is one of the most common reasons a CE program needs pre-compliance testing and design iteration.

Founder takeaway

Identify the right harmonized EMC standards for your product family and environment early, and pre-scan prototypes against them.
